Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) solutions have been designed to simplify power supply design and to reduce the amount of device implementations for a variety of applications. Battery management is a subset of PMIC that focuses on the power supply design components of the system, such as battery chargers, battery accumulators and buffer circuits. The MAX17040G+U is a complete high-performance, low-power, battery management system for multicell lithium-ion and Li-polymer batteries.
The MAX17040G+U is a single-chip solution that integrates an embedded microcontroller, fuel gauge, cell balancing and system protection circuitry into a tiny 4mm x 4mm, 28-pin QFN or TQFN package. This enhanced version includes programmable settings, remote-programmable EEPROM, a selectable 400mV or 200mV ADC voltage reference and true open-wire detection. The MAX17040G+U is also capable of accurately monitoring discharge and charge termination values, providing system level protection by detecting off-safe cell over/under-voltage and over-temperature conditions.
The MAX17040G+U provides a number of features for battery monitoring, charging and protection, including:
- Accurate voltage and temperature measurement with a single-cell accurate to 0.1%, and a temperature coefficient of -2mV/°C
- Low power operation with a maximum operating current of 250µA
- Serial passive cells balancing enabled by up to 3-bit current programmed balancing switches
- Remote programmable EEPROM with a dedicated serial interface and laser programmable write voltage
- Soft start for battery charging and unbalanced cell auto-conditioning
- True open wire diagnostic.
The MAX17040G+U is designed to be integrated into a wide range of applications where accurate and reliable battery monitoring and management systems are required. It offers high accuracy measurement of the battery’s voltage, current and temperature, as well as system level protection from off-safe cell over/under-voltage and over-temperature conditions. Additionally, the MAX17040G+U is capable of serial passive cells balancing, soft start for battery charging and unbalanced cell auto-conditioning.
The MAX17040G+U operating principle involves the measurement of the battery’s voltage and temperature, the current detection and the internal cell balancing scheme. The voltage is measured using an on-board A/D converter with a voltage reference selection of 200mV or 400mV, depending on the application requirements. The MAX17040G+Us integrated temperature sensor measures the battery’s temperature for temperature compensation and to activate thermally triggered actions.
Charge current is detected using a sense resistor. The current is proportional to the voltage across the sense resistor, which is converted to a digital value and stored in internal registers. After the current is detected, the MAX17040G+U begins balancing the cells using the current from the cell balancing switches. The cells are balanced using a pair of binary switches that are activated according to the number of balancing bits set in the configuration register. These switches distribute the current among the cells to equalize their voltage.
The MAX17040G+U provides a comprehensive set of features required for a complete battery management system. This includes serial passive cells balancing, true open wire diagnostic, integrated cell temperature sensing, programmable charge and termination settings and remote EEPROM programming.
