The MAX1706EEE+ is a high-performance, step-up DC-DC IC that features an internal low on-resistance power transistor. This integrated circuit (IC) is particularly suited for providing low cost and efficient power conversion of battery-based, single-cell Li-Ion or three-cell alkaline/NiMH systems. Its architecture combines a low component count and high integration to achieve a high efficiency, switch-mode power supply (SMPS) design with a relative fast Design cycle times. As a member of the MAX1706 series, the MAX1706EEE+ is the highest-performance and the most advanced member of this series that provides a host of versatile features.
The MAX1706EEE+ application field is broad, from power adaptors, notebook PC/PDA hHAReave or dual outlets, LCD TV and PDA accessories, ASIC/DSP/microprocessor core power supplies, portable instruments and data loggers, battery-powered MP3 players, and other consumer electronics. Additionally, the device can be used for telecommunication, networking, and transportation systems, as well as many other applications. MAX1706EEE+ offers an input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V and an output voltage range of 3.3V and +5V. It also features a dedicated enable pin and a power good flag and delivers up to 500mA of output current.
This Maxim integrated circuit is designed using advanced charge pumps and pulse-width modulation (PWM) control with an efficient synchronous rectifier to produce a low noise, high-efficiency, switch-mode power supply. Charge pumps are used to develop high gate drive voltages for the switch and transistor, ensuring low RDS(ON) and fast switching operations. PWM control is used to control the output voltage and current at a desired level. A synchronous rectifier is employed to increase the efficiency of the device, as compared to regular diode-rectified power supplies. Additionally, a tap compensation technique is used to further improve efficiency and eliminate the need for an external potentiometer. Moreover, a frequency foldback technique ensures an additional increase in efficiency and hot-switching capability.
Apart from excellent efficiency, the MAX1706EEE+ also has a wide range of features that make it suitable for a variety of applications. It has adjustable soft start/stop for programming of surge current limit as well as positive and negative slew rate control to minimize inrush current during start-up. The device also offers thermal and over-current protection, a programmable switching frequency and internal clock synchronization, and thermal shut down with hysteresis for an additional margin of safety. Lastly, it has an internal power switch, regulated-mode control, and low part-count.
The MAX1706EEE+ DC-DC switching regulator is designed for high efficiency, high output current, low noise, and low parts count while supporting a wide range of input and output voltages. Its versatile features, such as PWM control, synchronous rectifier, tap compensation, and foldback technique, make it a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for a variety of power management applications.
