MAX17131ETP+ is designed to be used in a wide variety of applications such as automotive headlights and tail lights, trailers and RV, industrial lighting, and many more. Its eye-catching feature is the high-efficiency current mode buck architecture supported by a low-input voltage of only 1.7 V and the 1.5-A maximum switch current. As a result, the MAX17131ETP+ offers the most efficiency (95% at no-load, 94% at full-load) and power density in the industry at just 0.17mm thick (1mm²). This makes it suitable for applications that require high-output current in a very small and low-profile package like automotive applications.Working Principle
The LED driver, such as MAX17131ETP+, is implemented using a fixed-frequency buck regulator topology. This topology ensures high efficiency, high power density and high accuracy. The architecture of this kind of LED driver comprises of a switching power stage, a comparator, and a control stage. The switching power stage is composed of a low on resistance power switch, a low RDSon power NMOS and an inductor. The comparator senses the output voltage and compares it with a reference voltage generated by the control stage, then compares the inductor current to the value stored in a reference DAC.As mentioned previously, LED driver is designed to power LEDs. So when implementing LED drivers, ad-hoc components need to be taken into account to ensure efficient performance, such as reverse-breakdown current-limiting resistors and ESD suppressors. When used in low-voltage operation (1.7 V or lower), the LED driver should also be protected with active foldback over-current protection. The current-sense amplifier will autonomously fold-back the switch current when the current sense resistor’s voltage reaches the preset over-current threshold.In addition to driving LEDs, the MAX17131ETP+ also provides a dedicated 3.3-V output that is able to supply up to 150 mA of current. This feature could enable system designers to make various circuits LEDs directly from the LED driver, therefore reducing the system power solution cost.Conclusion
