Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) is designed to provide highly efficient power distribution and management for system applications. PMIC is not just for computers, it is also used for wireless, automotive and industrial devices. Battery Management ICs are an important type of PMIC because they control the charging and discharging of a battery allowing the device to have longer battery life and robust performance. The MAX17201G+ is one type of Battery Management IC that allows systems to efficiently manage their battery-powered products.
The MAX17201G+ is designed for battery-powered systems with up to two cells connected in series for a total of up to 11V of charge capacity. It implements a linear charger, overcharge protection, and over-discharge protection for efficient energy management. It also offers MAX Fault™ technology, which provides a failsafe device to maintain overcharge, over-discharge, and short-circuit protection even when the controlling microcontroller fails.
The MAX17201G+ can include two pack arrangements. The single-cell arrangement allows the battery to be charged individually. The second cell arrangement allows two cells to be connected in series and charged at the same time. The MAX17201G+ includes an adjustable charge current limit and an adjustable charge voltage limit. The charge current limit allows the user to adjust the amount of current to be applied to the battery while the charge voltage limit allows the user to set the maximum voltage allowed to be applied during charging.
The MAX17201G+ Battery Management IC includes a low-dropout (LDO) regulator that can be used to provide output voltage level and current stability. The LDO\'s output can be adjusted to adapt to different levels of input voltage through an optional external voltage divider connected to the LDO\'s power supply pin. The LDO also allows up to two loads to be connected, providing system designers with the flexibility to choose the load suitable for their application.
The MAX17201G+ also offers three analog inputs, ACC1, ACC2, and ACC3, which can be used for two-wire sensing. These inputs allow for straightforward sense of charge and discharge current, as well as temperature monitoring. The MAX17201G+ also provides an undervoltage lockout (UVLO) function to prevent false triggering of the charge and discharge circuit due to there being insufficient input voltage.
The MAX17201G+ is optimized for use in a number of applications including cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and laptop computers. It is capable of driving up to one billion cycles and supports numerous safety protocols such as NTC or PTC temperature sensing.
