MAX17292ETCE+T Application Field and Working Principle

MAX17292ETCE+T is a Step-Down Input Voltage and a High-Efficiency Voltage Regulator. This device combines input and output protection along with internal current and thermal limiters, making it ideal for use in a variety of applications including, but not limited to, LCD and LED TV power supplies, cellular/smartphone power supplies, notebook adapters and many other applications.

The MAX17292OTCE+T features an integrated 5V power FET drive, enabling synchronous rectifier operation and higher efficiency. The floating bootstrap controller provides a controlled start-up with no extra external components. This device includes a wide range of operating voltages and supports a wide input voltage range. It also includes adjustable power-good status output, programmable current and thermal limit, integrated level shifter, over-current protection, and adjustable No Current Minimum on-time control. The adjustable current limit of this device offers protection against short-circuit and over-current conditions.

Working Principle

The main purpose of MAX17292OTCE+T is to regulate and control the voltage levels of a load. It does this by switching a high current power FET in the input stage on and off at a certain frequency, producing a low-ripple, regulated output voltage. The frequency is determined by an internal oscillator and can be adjusted based on the load current, output voltage and other parameters. Additionally, the ON-time of each cycle can be programmed by using an external resistor and a capacitor.

The device also has an integrated current limit circuit. This circuit monitors the load current and if it exceeds the programmed current limit it will cause the device to stop switching, thus preventing damage due to over-current conditions. Furthermore, it includes a built-in thermal protection circuit which will limit the junction temperature to a predetermined value, protecting the device from thermal overload. Additionally, the over-voltage protection circuit monitors the output voltage and will limit it to a predetermined level, protecting the load from over-voltage conditions.
