The MAX17506A is a dual-mode controller for point-of-load (POL) applications. It is designed to provide an optimized combination of performance, cost, and implementation complexity when used in a variety of point-of-load power conversion applications. The MAX17506A operates in either a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or a Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) mode, providing superior efficiency over a wide load range and input voltage range while minimizing external component count.
The MAX17506ATP+T is available in two different packages. It is offered in a tiny 6-bump microDFN package (suffix 12+) and also in a small, 3mm x 3mm TQFN package (suffix T).
The MAX17506ATP+T features a configurable soft-start, programmable enable/disable, automated overcurrent protection, and an integrated 32kΩ PG resistor for power good logic. It also offers a flexible architecture to enable application specific features.

Working Principle of MAX17506ATP+T
The MAX17506ATP+T operates in one of two modes; Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM). When in PWM mode, the switching frequency is set to constant; 250 kHz for the microDFN package and 150 kHz for the TQFN package. The PWM mode is the most efficient mode for operation and is used for normal load conditions. The PFM mode is optimized for lighter loads and consumes lower power. When in PFM mode, the switching frequency is set to constant and is proportional to the input voltage, meaning it will change depending on the input voltage. In addition, the PFM mode automatically loops back to the PWM mode under heavy load conditions.
The MAX17506ATP+T also features an integrated soft-start to reduce in-rush current. The soft-start can be programmed to any desired time frame. The integrated overcurrent protection provides maximum current protection and can be set to any desired level. The integrated 32-kΩ PG resistor is used for power good detection.
