The MAX17521ATG+ is a low-power automotive 2-cell Li-ion battery special purpose DC/DC step-down (buck) converter with current mode feedback and Tightly regulated voltage output over wide input voltage and temperature range. This device can operate in an input voltage range of 4.5V to 16V, with an adjustable output voltage of 0.8V to 5.5V. It is specifically designed to provide an efficient low-cost, high-output-current, small solution.This DC/DC switching regulator is part of the MAX17521 family of high-efficiency, low-Iq, automotive Li-ion battery converters. This family of devices is designed to provide ultra-low quiescent current and high power efficiency while supporting wide input voltage and wide temperature ranges. The MAX17521ATG+ utilizes a current-mode architecture to provide a high power factor at light loads and able to deliver up to 4.5A of output current.The MAX17521ATG+ powered by the ESOS system (Exclusive Soft Off Switching) architecture, the device can switch its input voltage without any additional control or feedback signals and it can safely support loads up to 4.5A. The Active Burst Mode (ABM) technique is applied for low-load operation that provides improved light-load efficiency with greater than 110µA quiescent current.The MAX17521ATG+ is optimized for automotive Li-ion battery applications, where the converter must be able to withstand high and low operating temperature ranges and high noise environments. This device is also capable of operating with input voltage variants down to 0.9V below the output voltage, ensuring that no current flows back towards the source, thereby preventing metallic and electrolytic corrosion.The device also features programmable soft-start and hiccup mode protection during short-circuits and over-current conditions. The load-disconnect function of this device enables the converter to disconnect the power path when the input voltage drops below the current set-point voltage and the output voltage will remain regulated through the output current limit.The MAX17521ATG+ offers a wide range of features for the use in automotive Li-ion battery management, such as thermal foldback, over-temperature, over-current protection and fault signalling.
