Introduction: The MAX17531ATBEVKIT# evaluation board is a complete power supply solution for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS (switch mode power supply) applications. This evaluation board is designed to evaluate and demonstrate the MAX17531 dual-channel flyback controller, MAX17595 offline trigger controller, MAX17595 LED driver, and MAX17596 LED driver. The board provides a complete system solution including power factor correction (PFC) and overvoltage protection (OVP).

Application Field: The MAX17531ATBEVKIT# evaluation board is ideal for a wide range of commercial and industrial applications requiring high performance DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS solutions. Examples of such applications include consumer products, medical devices, computers, servers, telecom systems, lighting, as well as new green energy and renewable energy systems. The platform supports maximum efficiency, with an efficiency of up to 95%.

Working Principle: The MAX17531ATBEVKIT# evaluation board is based on the dual-channel flyback controller, MAX17595 offline trigger controller, MAX17595 LED driver, and MAX17596 LED driver. It provides an integrated PFC and OVP solution. The evaluation board can run in both Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM). In CCM, the inductor current remains above the minimum fraction of a single cycle. This results in a smooth and efficient output voltage profile. In DCM, the inductor current will drop to zero between peaks. With this operation mode, there is good high-line efficiency and a smaller output filter.

The MAX17531ATBEVKIT# evaluation board has an integrated synchronous rectifier scheme—which reduces power losses in the back-end stage. It also features an integrated waveform shaping circuit, allowing designers to customize the output waveform profile in conventional flyback controllers, creating a more robust design. In addition, it also has an internal high-speed pre-bias start-up circuit for faster start-up times.

In terms of safety and compliance, the evaluation board has several features. For example, it has an adjustable OVP circuit as well as thermal shutdown protection, providing additional layer of protection. Furthermore, both the MAX17531 and MAX17595 contain hiccup/latch operations should an overcurrent, overvoltage, or overtemperature condition occur.
