.MAX17823AGCB/V+ Application Field and Working PrincipleThe MAX17823AGCB/V+ is a multi-function fuel-gauging controller designed for battery management in portable, power-constrained applications. Using an integrated memory to store the composed algorithm, it continuously reads battery voltage, current and temperature data from a series of external sensors to accurately track remaining capacity. The controller comes with a feature set and performance characteristics that aim to provide high accuracy, ease of integration, low power consumption and fast time-to-market.

The MAX17823AGCB/V+ employs a 12-bit A/D converter and Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator to support 1 µA of load current accuracy and load-change rejection up to 128 Hz with a 0.25Ω MOSFET pre-programmed with user-selected parameters for fast and easy design even for the most challenging applications. Furthermore, the fuel-gauging controller supports multiple compensation points, allowing for varying conditions such as discharge rate, battery temperature and device temperature.
The MAX17823AGCB/V+ implements a wide range of functions to fuel-gauge the batteries inside mobile devices, including:
- 12-bit A/D converter to read PrC, SoC and total available capacity
- Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator to measure load current
- Pre-programmed parameters to help configure the charge algorithm easily

The MAX17823AGCB/V+ monitor the state of the battery, such as PrC, SoC and total available capacity, through a 12-bit A/D converter and Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator. Delta-Sigma Modulators allow for highly accurate load current measurement, with a 0.25Ω MOSFET providing load current range up to 16mA. The Fuel-Gauging Controller supports multiple compensations points, allowing for varying conditions such as discharge rate, battery temperature and device temperature. Furthermore, the device also comes with a buffer for NTC resistor temperature measurement, energy offsets for load current compensation and an active watchdog for data safety.
In addition to the fuel gauging functions, the MAX17823AGCB/V+ also contains a full charging system with implemented overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature protection. The device supports charge currrent levels up to 1.5A and shutdown current at 10 µA. It also features a sync-type charge cycle completer, allowing a dead battery to recover without the need for an external cycle completer.
The MAX17823AGCB/V+ also comes equipped with a smart sleep mode to optimize performance and power consumption. This mode allows the device to enter low-power sleep mode while maintaining accuracy.
