The MAX1938EVKIT is an evaluation kit for an off-line, DC/DC & AC/DC SMPS (switched-mode power supply) with integrated power transistors. It is designed to provide a low-cost and flexible way to evaluate the performance of both DC/DC and AC/DC switcher applications and to optimize the design during the system integration process. The kit includes a pre-built DC/DC/AC/DC power supply board with the MAX1938 as well as an evaluation board with a socket and receptacle board and a daughter card. The kit also includes a variety of static and dynamic loads to enable experiments on the power supply board, a quick start guide, and printed circuit board (PCB) layout software.
The MAX1938 is a high-performance buck regulator with an integrated switchmode power MOSFET. It integrates several features including a wide VIN range, an MOSFET current limit, over temperature protection, a soft-start circuit, a cycle-by-cycle current limit, and a VIN under voltage lockout (UVLO). The MAX1938 operates from 4.5V to 35V inputs and provides up to 5A output current. The switching frequency is adjustable up to 1MHz, with different configurations for PWM mode and burst-mode operation.

In terms of working principle, a buck regulator such as the MAX1938 combines the features of a linear voltage regulator and a switched-mode power supply. In a buck regulator, the input voltage is converted into a regulated output voltage. This is done by using a switch to rapidly switch the input voltage on and off. The frequency of the switch\'s switching action is determined by the circuit design. When the switch is off, the voltage drop across the inductor increases until it reaches the peak, which is the output voltage. When the switch is on, the current stops increasing and instead flows through the output diode, bypassing the switch. The result of this operation is that the voltage at the output remains relatively constant and is determined by the peak voltage of the input signal.
The MAX1938EVKIT supports both PWM and burst-mode operation. In PWM mode, the switch\'s switching frequency is determined by the pulse width modulation frequency of the IC. During the on-time of the pulse, the inductor current ramps up until it reaches the peak current set by the current limit. At the end of the pulse, the inductor current also reaches its peak and the current limit setting takes effect. As for burst-mode operation, it works similarly to fixed frequency PWM, except that the control circuit is turned off when the output voltage is within a certain range. This helps to conserve energy and minimize losses, making it ideal for low power applications.
