Power Management - Specialized: MAX20323DENC+ Application Field and Working Principle

Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are essential for any microprocessor, especially those used in handheld devices and embedded applications. The buck output can be adjusted from 0.6V to 3.6V. The LDO output can be varied from 0.4V to 5.0V. Both outputs have a fast response time of 80mV and 0.5mV. CycleSkip™ and Pulse-Skipping Mode™ technologies can minimize quiescent current consumption and extend battery life of the system.

The working principle of MAX20323DENC+ is based on the Step-Down Buck Regulator topology. The voltage is regulated through two stages of components: an inductor, a diode, a metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). The buck converter is configured so that, as the input voltage increases, the voltage drop across the MOSFET decreases, allowing it to increase the voltage output to the load. The converter, which controls the MOSFET switching state, is typically called a PWM controller. Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) is a process used to keep the output voltage reliable, even under changing load conditions.

Apart from this, an adjustable precision LDO linear regulator is integrated on the MAX20323DENC+ to provide an adjustable output voltage, up to 5V. It derives the output voltage from an internal reference voltage and provides an output voltage accuracy of ±1.5%. It also provides a very fast response time of 0.7V/ms and a very low quiescent current of 0.35mA.
