Logic translators are specialized integrated circuits (ICs) that allow for the smooth and efficient transfer of signals between systems that communicate at different electrical levels. Level shifters make managing voltage levels easier, and are essential for any electronic design project — from communications systems to remote sensors — where one system communicates with another at a different voltage level. The MAX3394EEBL+TG45 is a patented Enhanced-Speed Level Translator, with two tiny, space-saving packages and integrated DC-DC converters.

This device belongs to a family of devices based on a patented incoming-skew-minimizing buffer architecture, with two tiny, space-saving packages that range from 1.8V to 5V operation. It easily provides bidirectional interface between devices operating at different supply levels while maintaining accurate timing and matching of data strobes. It bridges the voltage levels from 1.5V to 1.8V and from 3.3V to 5V, with a maximum translation of 0.8V. This device is targeted for use with I/O standards like PCI Express to support the latest technical Solutions. This device has very low power consumption, so it does not require large capacitors, nor does it require extensive power-supply sequencing.

The MAX3394EEBL+TG45 has five pins, four of which are I/O pins for bidirectional level shifting (IN1, OUT1, IN2 and OUT2). The fifth pin is the Vt pin, which is the translation voltage pin. This pin is shared by both the IN and OUT sides and sets the translation voltage of the device. The device can also be used as voltage level translators that duplicate the input data of one side to the output of the other side.

The device has a low-power mode that greatly reduces current consumption while still allowing it to maintain an interface between two voltage levels. The devices also include two sets of internal regulators, one for each side of the interface, that allow the I/O pins to operate at 1.8V and 3.3V, independent of the supply voltage of the device. Additionally, all of the I/O pins have power-saving shutdown and wake-up features that allow the device to be placed in a low-power mode when not in use, reducing wasted power and saving board space.
