The MAX5019CSA+ is a DC to DC switching controller that is specifically made to control the output of highly efficient, high-current 3.3V, 5V, 12V and 15V DC to DC switching converters. It takes an input voltage of 2.7 to 5.5V, supports external current-sense resistors and is ideal for powering microprocessor and digital logic core supplies in notebook computers, cellular phones, digital cameras and personal media players. The MAX5019CSA+ is an on-chip post regulator controller with adaptive on-time (AOT) control architecture. AOT is an architecture that enables the solving of the coupling between the input voltage and the output voltage of the converter by dynamically adjusting the switching frequency to the load and line variations. This architecture also provides maximum efficiency under light load operations and extends battery life. The MAX5019CSA+ features an internal soft-start for load-side output soft-start and an internal loop compensation capacitor for lower output noise. Additional features include an open load protection for both input and output sides, an external voltage reference for an accurate reference regulation to execute the maximum allowable current safely and an output short-circuit shield to protect the internal circuit from spurious short-circuit events.In order to operate the MAX5019CSA+, an external resistor is used to set the switching frequency, a capacitor is used to set the output voltage and a diode is used to provide the current-sensing function. The external resistor connected to the VSW pin sets the switching frequency to a value between 200kHz and 2MHz. The external capacitor connected to the VREF pin sets the reference voltage to the desired output voltage. The external diode connected to the CSN pin will monitor the output current in order to protect against a short-circuit.The MAX5019CSA+ provides superior performance and superior stability in fast DC to DC buck converter designs, and helps to reduce time-to-market for current-intensive VSUs in the latest generation high-end computing platforms. The device is offered in the tiny 6-pin TSOT23 and 8-pin SO packages. By supplying high-efficiency voltage regulation with fast reliable transient response, low output noise and robust short-circuit protection, the MAX5019CSA+ allows for much more freedom when designing DC to DC switching converters. This, along with its low power consumption, makes the MAX5019CSA+ an ideal choice for powering modern, demanding electronics.
