MAX5048AAUT-T is a peak- and valley-detecting gate driver for lowside high-side (half-bridge) P-channel and N-channel MOSFET or IGBTs. This gate driver uses a unique zero-crossing topology to ensure accurate over-current and short-circuit protection of all lowside and highside devices. It also offers robust fault protection, which maintains available dynamic power instead of damaging the gate driver or the STMicrolectronics family of microcontrollers.MAX5048AAUT-T is designed to drive applications that require a wide gate turn-on and turn-off voltage range. Its protection threshold limits and protective fault warning signals are designed to minimize over-current and short-circuit event damage, thus allowing for reliable operation with added product lifetime.MAX5048AAUT-T’s Application FieldMAX5048AAUT-T is suitable for driving P-channel and N-channel MOSFET and IGBT in a variety of applications, including motor Control, power inverter, switch mode power supplies, motor control and power supply for automotive, laboratory equipment, and energy storage systems. It is also used in medical equipment, measure and control equipment, uninterruptible power supply, telecom, and aerospace and defense applications.MAX5048AAUT-T’s Working PrincipleMAX5048AAUT-T’s working principle is based on the concept of zero crossing detection, which provides accurate over-current and short-circuit protection for the lowside and highside devices. The Zero Crossing Detection scheme used in MAX5048AAUT-T detects a zero crossing condition on the high-side and low-side transistors output, and immediately detects the current position. The peak voltage is sensed directly from the oscilloscope output while the valley is measured using a voltage comparator (Vcom).The Vcom sends a signal to the gate driver when the voltage outage is detected, paralysing the gate driver immediately. The control logic in the MAX5048AAUT-T monitors the voltage, current and temperature of the high-side and low-side transistors, providing for window-guard protection for the gate driver. The gate driver can be enabled during this state, as long as the conditions are under the accepted voltage, current, and temperature.In addition, the MAX5048AAUT-T includes over-current and short-circuit protection to minimize system damage. The integrated fault warning signal indicates when current limit begins and/or when over-temperature occurs. The internal circuitry of MAX5048AAUT-T checks for excessive gate voltage and directly turns off the low-side high-side gate driver to prevent circuit damage.
