The MAX5947AESA+ is an advanced level of Hot Swap Controllers, incorporated with sophisticated features that provide robust power management and intelligent control capability. MAX5947AESA+ provides a self-managed power solution for Hot Swap applications. This innovative device features low-capacitance hot-swap enable control of N-channel MOSFETs and includes integrated over-voltage protection, inrush current limiting, fault capturing, and reverse-current limiting functions. With an integrated precision supply voltage regulator, superior noise immunity, and internal linear and power MOSFET transistor arrays, the MAX5947AESA+ is designed for implementation in modern hot-swap designs.
The MAX5947AESA+ Hot Swap Controller offers a variety of advanced features for safely initiating Hot Swap operations. Included are four over-current threshold selections, with active gate drive pre-bias and external gate-drive disable control. Additionally, the MAX5947AESA+ integrates two double-pole double-throw (DPDT) switches, 5V resistive-mode clamped output, slew rate controlled Soft Shutdown, and supply and output voltage monitor supervisors. The integrated device also includes a 2μA current source, temperature-limit sensing, and Preemptive Soft Start.
At its core, the MAX5947AESA+ Hot Swap Controller operates on a specific working principle. When an AC power source is connected to the switching power supply, an over-voltage detector monitors the output of the power supply. When an over-voltage is detected, the MAX5947AESA+ shuts off the power flow and enters a momentary soft-start mode. Once the over-voltage is corrected, the controller resumes normal operation. The device also incorporates a slew-rate-controlled soft-shutdown circuit that prevents inrush current from exceeding safe levels by regulating the load current when the power supply is connected.
