The MAX5961ETM+ is a Hot-Swap Controller that features advanced protection and control functions. It is designed to provide a simple and efficient way to safely power on and off power modules in electronic systems. In addition to its advanced protection and monitoring functions, the MAX5961ETM+ is also designed to give designers greater flexibility and control over their hot-swap implementations.

A Hot Swapping device like the MAX5961ETM+ is an important tool for safely transitioning and powering up and down power modules in a system. It is designed to act as an interface between the power supply and the load and provide circuit protection against accidental over voltage, short circuit and over-current conditions. The MAX5961ETM+ is specifically designed to provide full protection in high power systems such as server infrastructures, computer motherboard power supply systems and industrial applications.

The MAX5961ETM+ is a Hot-Swap controller with over-voltage protection (OVP), adjustable current limit, over temperature protection (OTP) and two isolated auxiliary power supplies. The over-voltage protection automatically limits the voltage to a predefined safe voltage and the adjustable current limit provides a configurable load current limit. The OTP feature detects an over temperature condition, and shuts down the hot-swap controller’s output. The two isolated auxiliary power supplies allow for higher node power distribution, allowing for higher current requirement applications.

The MAX5961ETM+ is also equipped with an innovative current foldback operating mode that is designed to protect the device from inrush current. Inrush current occurs when there is a large amount of current drawn initially, when a system is powered up. The current foldback mode limits the amount of inrush current, thus protecting the device from damage. This innovative feature of the MAX5961ETM+ provides additional protection and reliability to a system.

The MAX5961ETM+ also has a high frequency power capacitor for added filtering, which improves ripple rejection performance and reduces noise.
