PMIC - Supervisors
Power Management ICs, or PMICs, are integrated circuits that help manage the flow of power in a wide range of electronic products. Among them, Supervisors are used to sense, monitor and control power supply and reset conditions. One type of Supervisors is MAX6302CUA, which provides two independent push-pull reset outputs, an active-low reset and an active-high reset. Working Principle
The MAX6302CUA features two independent push-pull outputs: an active-low reset (RESET) and an active-high reset (NRST). The RESET output is normally open, and NRST output is normally closed. If VCC reaches a certain threshold (1.25V, typical) the outputs switch from their normal states accordingly. The voltage of the VCC pin is monitored by an internal bandgap voltage reference circuit and exceeds the threshold, the reset output is asserted active low. Similarly, if the threshold is not reached and is less than 1.25V, the RESET output is de-asserted, while the NRST output is asserted active-high.
The MAX6302CUA also includes a temperature sensor to monitor its own operating temperature. The temperature-dependent reset threshold can be programmed via its two selectable trip point references. During normal operation, the temperature rises above its nominal threshold, and the IC will detect and report it through the T/CRST signal.
The MAX6302CUA Supervisor offers two selectable reset signal hold times, 1ms and 20ms. The 1ms hold time allows the device to reset faster, and thus minimizes the time between reset initiation and reset signal active time. On the other hand, the 20ms hold time ensures that RESET signal is held for enough time for any clocked logic circuit, preferably between power-up and power-down times.
In order to improve immunity to noise and overvoltage, the MAX6302CUA features an on-board zener diode and clamping circuitry to protect the device from voltage spiking up to 12V. The MAX6302CUA also includes a LDO to provide a regulated voltage, which is typically used to power logic devices or device driver circuits.
