Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is an important class of integrated circuits. PMICs integrate many different functions in a single chip, such as voltage regulation, current regulation, power conversion, power sequencing, signal conditioning and signal isolation. Supervisors are an important type of PMIC, which are usually used to monitor a supply line voltage, voltage change and detect short circuit faults. The MAX694MJA/883B supervisor IC is an example of such PMICs.

The MAX694MJA/883B is a precision micropower reset generator designed to provide a low power reset circuit. It features a current-limited, fixed-threshold voltage detector to monitor a power-supply voltage. When the supply voltage drops below a pre-determined threshold, the reset signal is asserted and can last up to 250ms (short timeout) depending on the RC components connected to it. The reset circuit is triggered on power up and power down, which is ideal for monitoring power-supply systems in microprocessor-based systems.

In addition, the MAX694MJA/883B can be used to detect overvoltage, reverse-voltage and short-circuit conditions. An overvoltage comparator is provided to detect a rise in the supply voltage above a preset threshold. The OV pin is held low when the supply voltage is higher than the preset threshold and is released when the supply voltage returns to normal. The reverse-voltage comparator is provided to detect a fall in the supply voltage below the preset threshold. The REV pin is held low when the supply voltage is lower than the preset threshold and is released when the supply voltage returns to normal. Furthermore, the device monitors the supply voltage for short-circuit conditions and will assert a reset signal if the voltage drops below 1V.
