PMIC - Supervisors are a type of Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC). They are commonly used in consumer electronics, telecommunications, automotive and other industries to provide protection against overvoltage, reverse polarity and overcurrent. The MAX704CSA is a type of PMIC – Supervisor, which is widely used in providing power management in various applications.

The MAX704CSA, from Maxim Integrated, is a high-performance, low-cost, voltage supervisor IC with built-in microprocessor system reset and pushbutton reset. This supervisor IC can predict and protect against supply voltage glitches, brownouts and faults, thereby improving the reliability and safety of a system. The MAX704CSA’s working principle is based on its ability to sense any change in its input voltage, that is, a rising voltage or a falling voltage. When the voltage at the input falls below or rises above the user-defined threshold, the device generates a reset signal to reset the microprocessor or logic circuitry.

The reset can be either a 0.5s latch-up reset, a 0.5s power-on reset or a 0.5s manual reset. When the reset signal is generated, any voltage at the output will drop to low and the power-on LED will be switched off. Moreover, the reset output will be held low until the power-on LED is switched on and the voltage at the input reaches the user defined threshold. In order to ensure fast and reliable source of reset, the device also provides an internal charge pump and capacitor for reset power.

Another important feature of the MAX704CSA is its ability to output a low or high reset signal depending on the logic level setup in its configuration memory. The device is configurable to provide an active low reset signal, an active high reset signal or an open drain output. This feature makes the MAX704CSA suitable for a variety of applications, such as a single-pole, double-throw switch reset mechanism in microprocessor-controlled applications.

In addition, the MAX704CSA can be configured to monitor the voltage at two different input pins. It also includes two adjustable voltage comparators with configurable hysteresis, which allow it to trigger reset signal under conditions like reverse polarity and/or overvoltage/undervoltage. This ability is particularly useful in applications requiring a wide range of protection.
