Supervisory Integrated Circuits (also known as Supervisors) are used in embedded system designs to monitor various operating conditions, such as power supply faults, system reset, overvoltage, brownout and watchdog activities. The MAX705EPA+ supervisory IC is a feature packed supervisory chip offering a wide range of monitoring capabilities in a single 8-pin package.

The MAX705EPA+ uses a precision voltage reference and an accurac comparator to monitor power supplies and reset their associated systems. Data protections circuits compare inputs with a 0.34V voltage threshold to detect overvoltage or brownout conditions, while an integrated auto-wakeup timer can be programmed to generate system reset or wakeup signals. The MAX705EPA+ also offers a dedicated watchdog timer with a wide timeout adjustment range for detecting system malfunctions.

The MAX705EPA+ features a minimum reset ondelay time of 250ms, low power consumption of typically < 1µA when configured as a reset only device, an output stage capable of driving an open-drain MOSFET or providing an active-low push-pull reset signal and an adjustable falling VDD (VβL) threshold for resetting the system with a guaranteed reset delay time of 1.5ms typical at VDD = 2V.

The MAX705EPA+ is available in an 8-pin SOT-23 package, making it suitable for use in a variety of applications such as power-on reset and voltage monitoring in personal computers, telecommunications and consumer products. Additionally, with its low cost and small size, the MAX705EPA+ is ideal for portable and battery operated products.

The MAX705EPA+ is designed to be easy to use in any given application. It features a wide operation range from 2.4V to 6V for powering, programming and monitoring and is relatively straightforward to configure. To adjust the reset and threshold voltages, a voltage divider is connected between VCC and GND that sets the threshold as well as a reference voltage for the programming of the reset delay time. This voltage divider also provides the voltage for the internal logic circuitry of the MAX705EPA+.

The MAX705EPA+ is a versatile supervisor that can be used to protect many types of systems from power supply or reset faults. Its integrated voltage threshold comparator and watchdog timer provide high performance while its small package size and low power consumption make it ideal for use in small and battery operated applications.
