Application Field

Supervisors are used in a variety of system-level configurations and applications as a means of protecting against erratic power supply operation and system malfunctions. The MAX706CPA is ideal for use in system applications requiring regulated internal power supplies, such as automotive and industrial, or in applications needing manual or automatic reset or watchdog functions.

The MAX706CPA supports a wide range of applications because of its wide operating voltage of 2.05V to 6V, low power consumption of only 2µA, and precise voltage threshold. Its range of 3V to 7V makes the MAX706CPA useful for multiple types of system-level reset and monitoring applications.

Working Principle

The MAX706CPA functions as both a POR circuit and WDT circuit. Upon power-on, the POR circuit asserts a reset signal as long as input voltage is less than the reset threshold voltage. An external capacitor connected to the Reset output pin and ground determines the delay time for the reset signal to be valid. Once the input voltage falls below the reset threshold, the POR circuit will assert the Reset signal, resetting the system and running the WDT.

Meanwhile, the WDT acts as a failsafe mechanism that monitors system operation. While the power input is above the reset threshold and a periodic signal is received by the WDT, the WDT keeps track of time. If the power supply is interrupted, the WDT will detect the disruption and will reset the system.

To ensure accuracy, the MAX706CPA can be used with multiple voltage references and can be adjusted to provide an additional level of precision while also providing a hysteresis feature to minimize output fluctuations.

The MAX706CPA offers a wide range of features to improve system-level monitoring and to reduce power consumption. Its accurate voltage threshold and low power consumption make the MAX706CPA ideal for many applications requiring reliable power reset and monitoring.
