Working Principle

Typical working of the MAX709SCPA+ is as follows: it monitors an input voltage on pin VCC or VBAT, compares this voltage to two predetermined levels: NVI (nominal) and PVI (programmable voltage detect) limits. In standby mode, VCC is compared against NVI setting. If it falls below NVI, a reset output is triggered and the reset is held low until VCC rises back above NVI. In conditional reset mode, the MAX709SCPA+ continuously monitors VCC to ensure VCC does stay above PVI, and will reset the system if VCC drops below the PVI limit. This reset is held until the input voltage rises above the RESET hold voltage limit (EVI). Besides these two modes, the MAX709SCPA+ can enter active-high or active-low reset modes by connecting the reset pin to ground. Moreover, the MAX709SCPA+ is equipped with hysteresis which ensures false triggering is avoided during transients. Hysteresis is the difference between the PVI and NVI thresholds, where NVI > PVI. When Hysteresis is enabled via Equation 1, NVI increases by Hysteresis (HYS) offset by a preset (HYS1) and PVI decreases by HYS offset by a preset (HYS2). Finally, the MAX709SCPA+ also has diagnostic reporting which can indicate the status of the power source. Diagnostic code is transmitted on pin DIAG, where pin DIAG is driven high if the voltage on pin VCC falls below Nominal Voltage Level (NVI), and low if the voltage on pin VCC is above PVI + Hysteresis (HYS 2).
