MAX776ESA+ Application Field and Working PrincipleMAX776ESA+ is a low power, monolithic, integrated switched mode power supply (SMPS) designed to regulate input voltage and optimize the delivery of power from an input voltage source to an output load. This device is part of a family of DC-DC switching controllers from the Power Management & Regulator (PMR) product line offered by Maxim Integrated for applications ranging from consumer electronics to communications and computing.The MAX776ESA+ is an adjustable, general-purpose, voltage regulator and switch Controller meant for step-down (buck) Voltage conversion applications. The device is composed of two main blocks, an oscillator with pulse width modulation (PWM) logic and a power stage. It provides user-programmable current limit, output voltage and soft-start feature, enabling system to provide reliable, power efficient and optimized power solution. This device is designed to provide fixed and adjustable output voltage applications through the use of an integrated end-of-line (EOL) current limit circuitry, enabling system designers to ensure performance and reliability with the guarantee of overcurrent protection. The device is suitable for applications requiring low voltage, tight regulation, and high efficiency.The MAX776ESA+ is designed to operate in peak current mode or in valley current mode, which are particular types of control methods employed in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). Peak current mode was specifically designed to provide an easier implementation in applications requiring current-mode control and higher operating frequencies for improved transient response. In this mode, switching is triggered when the current in the switch reaches its peak value and the voltage sampled from the output is compared to the voltage set by the current limit threshold. The duty cycle of the output is then adjusted accordingly.Valley current mode, on the other hand, was designed to reduce the size of the inductor needed for converters operating at high frequencies. In this mode, switching is triggered when the current in the switch reaches its valley (minimum) value, which results in a lower ripple current through the switch. The duty cycle of the output is then adjusted accordingly.The MAX776ESA+ also features an integrated soft-start capability that prevents large in-rush current and rapid turn-on events when the load is applied at the beginning. It features a switch that clamps the voltage at the switching node, providing lower EMI and improved EMC immunity. The device can also be operated with external current limit control, allowing the user to configure the current limit information according to the device’s requirements.The MAX776ESA+ is a highly efficient, adjustable and reliable step-down (buck) voltage regulator IC, suitable for industrial and consumer applications. The integrated end-of-line (EOL) current limit circuitry, adjustable output voltage and adjustable current limit features provide precise control and protection against overcurrent events, while the soft-start capability allows the device to be startup without raising in-rush current. This device also features two switching modes (Peak and Valley current mode) to reduce ripple and EMI compared to other operational regimes. The device is available in a 14-pin TSSOP package, making it highly suitable for board-level integration.
