The MAX8643AETG/V+ is a highly integrated DC-DC switching regulator system with two independent PWM channels. It combines a dual input PWM buck regulator, two low dropout linear regulators (LDOs), a battery charger, and system power sequencing into one integrated package. This regulator system is designed to deliver several advanced features, including intelligent power sequencing, charge/power-path management, and system current/voltage protection.

Application Field

The MAX8643AETG/V+ is widely used in the field of handheld and portable products, such as cellular phones, mobile data communications, digital still cameras, and PDAs. With the integrated low quiescent current, high power DC-DC converter and LDOs, a total of 5 output voltages can be provided for different applications. The battery charger provides accurate charge/discharge current and voltage control with programmable safety time-out and end-of-charge detection. In addition, the dual input powers from AC adapter and battery can be managed to supply system power and recharge the battery simultaneously while meeting the mobile product’s low stand-by current requirements.

Working Principle

The MAX8643AETG/V+ combines an internally compensated dual PWM buck regulator with two low dropout linear regulators (LDOs). The buck regulator provides fast transient response, high efficiency, and low output voltage noise over a wide input voltage range. The dual output of the buck regulator is synchronized and provides a rail-to-rail output voltage range at the two output pins. This enables the maximum flexibility in providing independent power rails for the system. The buck regulator also features current limited protection and fixed: frequency operation.

The two LDOs provide a fixed-output voltage, low dropout and excellent line/load transient characteristics for the system. The LDOs are capable of delivering up to 150mA each. In addition, the MAX8643AETG/V+ provides input current limit and thermal shutdown protection to protect the system from excessive currents or D.C. operating temperature. The battery charger includes a voltage/current regulation loop for accurate charge termination and a thermal regulation loop for automatic cooling. The charge/power-path management feature ensures the battery is charged quickly and efficiently.

The MAX8643AETG/V+ also offers advanced power sequencing that enables system engineers to select the output voltage slew rates and the number of soft start cycles required to ensure a smooth system turn-on. There is also on-chip system current/voltage monitoring feature to tightly control the system voltage and current in both the LDO and buck output sections.
