The MAX9244GUM+ is an integrated analog front end (AFE) for applications operating in the frequency bands used by cellular and personal communications services (PCS) systems. It integrates the entire radio frequency (RF) section, eliminating the need for expensive external filters, mixers, frequency synthesizers, and so on. The device consists of two primary components: a transmitter section and a receiver section.

The transmitter section consists of a variable gain amplifier (VGA), multi-band up- and down-converter with image-reject up- and down-conversion, a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with gain control, and the radio frequency, intermediate frequency (RF/IF) filters. Only two external components are required in the TX loop, a loop filter and a LO buffer.

The receiver section consists of a VGA, multi-band up- and down-converter with image-reject up- and down-conversion, a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with automatic gain control (AGC), a variable gain amplifier (VGA) and the RF/IF filters. Only four external components are required in the RX loop, a first IF filter, a second IF filter, a narrowband rejection filter, and a LO buffer.

The MAX9244GUM+ provides an integrated solution for applications requiring both low power consumption and simplicity in design and integration. Its small form factor allows easy interfacing to the majority of radio transceivers available on the market today. Standard features include frequency stability, improved modulated performance, better power dissipation, faster tracking and settling time, lower spurious signals, improved sensitivity and selectivity, and better power-supply rejection ratio.

The MAX9244GUM+ is an ideal solution for developing integrated transceivers for GSM, EDGE, CDMA2000, WCDMA, and other applications operating in 2G/3G/4G cellular bands. The integrated architecture and complete interface to the baseband and analog control signals greatly simplifies system design, keeping the number of external components and cost to a minimum.

The MAX9244GUM+ works as an analog baseband filter in order to minimize the noise generated by the radio transceiver. It uses a continuous-time filter in the receive and transmit paths that provide high attenuation for out-of-band signals and a wide operating frequency range of 25 to 3500 MHz. The output of the MAX9244GUM+ is then interfaced directly to a digital radio frequency (RF) transceiver, offering improved integration and fewer external components.

The MAX9244GUM+ also includes the additional features of integrated LO buffer, mixer predriver, and external digital/analog control signal input to program the gain and frequency settings. These features result in improved power dissipation, higher linearity, increased immunity to digital interference and faster settling time.

The integrated architecture of the MAX9244GUM+ simplifies system design, making it ideal for low-power applications, including cell phones, wireless local area network (WLAN) access points, radio access networks (RANs), and wireless base stations. Its small form factor and flexible control signals make it a great solution for any compact radio application where size and cost-effectiveness are important.
