The MAXREFDES98# Evaluation Board is an evaluation platform for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications. The board is designed to assist users in evaluating the MAXREFDES98# integrated solution for off-line power conversion applications, primarily in isolated-output applications.
The board is targeted for low-power applications that require multiple output(s) over an operational input voltage range of 3.3V to 26V. It is enabled by the combination of the UCC28730 Synchronous Rectifier Buck Controller and UCC24620 Synchronous Rectifier Buck Controller for achieving a high-performance, low-power isolated-output power system.
The MAXREFDES98# Evaluation Board enables a 7V to 24V input voltage range. The 3A current-limited buck converter is rated to drive a 300 mA load. The evaluation board comprises of two main components, the UCC28730 Synchronous Rectifier Buck Controller and the UCC24620 Synchronous Rectifier Buck Controller. The UCC28730 is configured as the main converter which is used to generate a regulated output voltage of 12V while the UCC24620 is configured as the auxiliary converter which is used to generate a regulated output voltage of 3.3V. The main and auxiliary converters are independently regulated, and both support fixed output voltage and adjustable output voltage modes.
The REF Designs 98# Evaluation Board is configured using the MAXREFDES98# base board with the UCC28730 controller on-board. The board uses a 2.4mm X 3.5mm pin board-to-board connector to establish the main power connections and to enable the user to connect a power supply to the board, used to provide the input cost voltage. Other connectors are used to control and monitor pins in the device through external connections.
As far as efficiency is concerned, the MAXREFDES98# Evaluation Board achieves a maximum peak efficiency of 90%. This is achieved by using the maximum available usable area of the board for the implementation of the Buck regulators and also by taking advantage of the limited quiescent current offered by the UCC28730 and the UCC24620.
The MAXREFDES98# Evaluation Board allows the user to evaluate the performance of the integrated solution for off-line power conversion applications. This evaluation board enables the user to evaluate the performance characteristics of the UCC28730 and UCC24620 synchronous rectifier Buck controllers under a variety of conditions, such as variable input voltage, load current, and output voltage. It also allows for the evaluation of features such as over-current protection, over-temperature protection, and voltage margining.
The MAXREFDES98# Evaluation Board also features an extensive suite of graphical user interface (GUI) tools that provide the user with the ability to monitor and control the operation of the boards. The GUI tools include an oscilloscope, a power supply current and voltage monitor, a power supply current limit adjuster, an adjustable output voltage adjuster, an output power monitor, and a thermal shutdown adjuster.
MAXREFDES98# Evaluation Board is easy to use and cost effective. It enables the user to evaluate and test the performance of the UCC28730 and UCC24620 synchronous rectifying DC/DC and AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS designs in an easy, safe, and reliable manner.
