The MAZ23000AG is a single zener diode that is designed for applications such as voltage regulation, overvoltage protection, and reverse-bias current limiting.

Basic Structure

A MAZ23000AG diode consists of an intrinsic semiconductor junction between two dissimilarly doped regions, called a p-n junction. The PN junction is made from one region of P type material, and one region of N type material. The junction contains holes in areas of the P region and electrons in areas of the N region. Additionally, the junction has an insulated layer located over it, that acts as a barrier, to prevent electrical current from flowing until a threshold voltage is reached. This layer is known as the depletion zone.

Functioning Principle

The MAZ23000AG diode functions by allowing electrical current to flow in a single direction, while blocking current in the opposite direction, as defined by the “forward bias/reverse bias” concept. When the diode is forward-biased, a positive charge is applied to the positive terminal and a negative charge is applied to the negative terminal, allowing current to flow through the diode. The amount of current allowed to pass through the diode depends on the amount of voltage applied, the current-voltage ratio, and the dynamic resistance of the diode itself.Once the predetermined threshold voltage has been reached, the depletion zone is broken down, and current will flow from the N-type material to the P-type material, or vice versa, depending on the bias polarity. The MAZ23000AG has a zener voltage of 10.3 V. This means that the diode will allow current to pass in either direction at a voltage of 10.3V.

Application Field

As a result of its unique characteristics, the MAZ23000AG diode can be used in a variety of applications. For example, it can be used in voltage regulation, where it will maintain a constant voltage output. Additionally, it can be used in overvoltage protection, in order to prevent any voltage spikes from damaging sensitive electronic components. Furthermore, it can be used to limit reverse-bias current, and act as a form of reverse-bias protection.
