The MAZ8360GML operates on the principle of the zener diode. It consists of two back-to-back PN-junction diodes connected in parallel. Under forward biasing, the current passes through the junction and is diverted in opposite directions thanks to the depletion layer at the junction. When a reverse voltage is applied, the PN-junction breakdown occurs, allowing current to flow in the opposite direction. This is the principle adopted in a zener diode.

When connected to an AC power source, the MAZ8360GML acts as a linear voltage regulator and can supply a constant, regulated DC output voltage. It works by diverting the excessive current of the circuit to its own cathode. This allows the device to protect the circuit by preventing it from overloading. In this way, it is able to provide steady, safe power to the connected devices.

The MAZ8360GML can also be used as a voltage comparator or differential amplifier. For instance, by connecting the diode’s anode to a variable resistor, the device can be used to compare the input current with a reference voltage.
