MAZ80470ML application field and working principle

MAZ80470ML is placed in the classification of single Zener diode. Zener diode is a semiconductor electronic component, which a reverse-biased PN junction allowing electricity to move from the P type layer to the N type layer at a specified voltage. Due to its characteristics, it is applied for voltage regulation, signal restoration and temperature compensation. Especially for this model MAZ80470ML, it can be used in logic circuit and clamping circuits.

The working principle of MAZ80470ML is that when the applied voltage is higher than the Zener voltage, the diode will block it, limiting the maximum voltage going to circuit elements, thus protecting devices or logic circuits which cannot bear too high voltage. On the contrary when the applied voltage is lower than the Zener voltage, it would behave like a regular diode. The Zener voltage also can be adjusted by selecting different Zener diode, as Zener voltage is determined by characteristics of the diode.

For a regular diode, it is like a controlled open door, allowing electricity to flow from the P region to the N region at the forward bias voltage. This operation voltage is determined by the thickness and material of different PN junction, and is labeled as the forward voltage on the datasheet. With the symmetry operation of opposite direction, reverse bias voltage opens another entry into the PN junction, and current will follow this easy path and flows from N region to P region.

If the applied voltage is low, electric current will be limited to a low level, such as leakage current in a diode. This application field of a diode is limited, and Zener Diode was invented to improve this situation. The most obvious difference between a regular diode and a Zener diode is that when the electric current passes through a regular diode, the voltage drops due to its resistance. However, when the electric current passes through a Zener diode, the voltage is kept at a specified value, or the Zener Voltage.

At the same time, a Zener diode is not perfect with its Zener voltage, compared with an ideal diode. This is because there exists a leakage current on Zener diode, which is known as the Zener Current, flowing through the junction when it is reverse-biased. Generally, a higher Zener Voltage will result in a higher Zener Current. If the current is too high, it will damage the diode, so the maximum current should not be exceeded.

These two kinds of current respectively imply two kinds of application for MAZ80470ML. For the Zener Current, it could be used as a current regulator and also as a constant voltage device. For the leakage current, it could be used as a voltage regulator since it follows an exponential and predictable change with zener voltage.
