MC10H166FNR2 Application Field and Working Principle

The MC10H166FNR2 is a high-speed, high-performance comparator in the Logical - Comparators family. It is a single-ended 8-bit signed comparator and contains an inherent high-speed reset circuit that seperates the Compare registers from the control word in one cycle upon application.The MC10H166FNR2 is designed for applications such as circuit breaker detection, data decisioning and fault detection. This comparator can compare two 8-bit signed numbers, detects the difference between them and can thus decide whether the numbers are equal or not. This ability is especially important in high-speed circuit breakers, as MC10H166FN RP2 can acquire and compare data at a quick rate.The MC10H166FNR2 also has a "double speed" mode that allows the integration of two 8-bit signed inputs and compares them to the compare registers within a single clock cycle. This mode is immensely useful in the case of high-speed fast power switches, as they need to make a decision within a single clock cycle in order to avoid circuit breakers and power faults.The MC10H166FNR2 operates based on the current-steering concept. This concept is based on using differential inputs to control the current flow between two or more branches. The input data is fed into the differential input and then the current is steered by the MC10H166FNR2 to the output side. The current is steered depending on the state of the comparator and the operation is performed in various stages.In the first stage, the MC10H166FNR2 compares the two inputs and the output of the comparator reflects the difference between the two inputs. At this stage the comparator only indicates a "1" or a "0", indicating whether two register values are equal or not.In the second stage, the MC10H166FNR2 enables the integrated latch circuit, allowing the storage of comparator output. In the third stage, the MC10H166FNR2 latches the output, thus storing the comparison result. At this stage, the compare registers have their contents stored so that the comparison results need not to be repeated every time.In the fourth stage, a reset circuit is enabled so that the compare registers are kept in a known, steady state.
