The MC14585BCPG is part of a family of logic-comparators from Motorola Semiconductor. The MC14585BCPG logic-comparator is a five-input, high-speed, complementary transistor-transistor (TTL) Schmitt-trigger usable with both 5V and 15V gates and features tight output switching threshold hysteresis, very low power dissipation and input feedthrough.
Typically the MC14585BCPG is used in applications such as digital techniques, low speed pulse-width measurement, transition detectors, video clamps and analog techniques such as auto-zeroing comparators, where high speed operation, low power dissipation and low cost are desired.
The MC14585BCPG logic-comparator has five inputs: two input voltages, VIN1 and VIN2, two threshold inputs, VTH1 and VTH2 and an enable input, EN. The threshold voltages, VTH1 and VTH2, have independent feedback paths, allowing the user to tailor the hysteresis of the outputs, Q and Q* (the complement of Q).
The logic-comparator contains four Schmitt-trigger stages connected as an analog-to-digital converter. The first stage compares the input voltage, VIN1, to the corresponding threshold voltage, VTH1, then each successive stage compares the output of the prior stage, to the succeeding threshold voltage. The input voltage must pass through all four Schmitt-trigger stages before the output, Q, will switch.
When the logical state on EN is a "logic 0," the logic-comparator output, Q, will be logic 0, and the logic-comparator is disabled. When EN is a logic 1, the logic-comparator is enabled, and the output logic state will depend on the input voltage, VIN1.
The hysteresis of the outputs, Q and Q*, (the complement of Q) is determined by the threshold inputs, VTH1 and VTH2, the circuit between VTH1 and the first Schmitt-trigger stage, and the feedback paths. An increasing threshold voltage will increase the hysteresis, reducing the possibility of the output crossing from logic 0 to logic 1, then back to logic 0, within a single voltage-controlled step.
The unique construction of the MC14585BCPG provides high speed, low power operation and robust output switching. The voltage swing and rise times of the outputs are insensitive to variations in temperature, voltage and load, allowing flexibility in design and reliable operation.
