MC33060APG application field and working principle
The MC33060APG is an energy efficient and powerful, cost-effective DC-DC switching controller from Freescale Semiconductor (now known as NXP Semiconductors) that caters to the converters and voltage regulators for various applications. It belongs in the Parameteric Monolithic IC (PMIC) category and in particular, the Voltage Regulators and DC DC Switching Controllers subcategory.The device is specifically designed to serve as a voltage regulator or buck/boost converter and includes a pulse width modulator (PWM) and MOSFET driver circuit that can manage high switching frequencies. The working principle of the MC33060APG is based on an internal PWM controller and MOSFET driver. It is a synchronous buck switch controller with a maximum duty cycle of 95%. The MC33060APG has two timer phases which are used to control the switching of the power MOSFET, operating either in fixed frequency mode or in temperature compensated mode.
In fixed frequency mode, the two timers are locked and are configured by the external resistor and capacitor. The pulse-width of the switching cycle is determined by the external feedback voltage. While in temperature compensated mode, the two timers are not locked, and their frequencies are automatically adjusted depending on system temperature. This allows the device to remain stable under a wide range of operating conditions, and ensures that the output voltage remains constant.
Additionally, the MC33060APG provides a current-limit protection system, monitoring the peak current in the MOSFET. If the output current exceeds the peak current limit, the device will reduce the switch frequency to prevent the system from damaging the MOSFET. The instrument also features a shutdown system that will turn the output off immediately when the input voltage exceeds the under voltage lockout level, preventing input current overshoot.
The MC33060APG is a well-rounded device that offers a variety of features, making it reliable yet easy to use.
