MC33067DWG voltage regulator application field and working principles
The MC33067DWG is a Voltage Regulator fromSTMicroelectronics\' DC DC Switching Controllers series. It isdesigned to handle various DC to DC switching applications withminimum effort. The device can be used in buck, boost and buck–boostregulations and has the advantage of minimum Switch On switchinglosses. It provides fast and accurate current limit circuitry byswitching the Switch rapidly in and out of the circuit whenexcessive currents are detected.
The MC33067DWG is designed to operate at WideExperimental Range, has an adjustable switching frequency rangeof 300 to 1000 kHz, can efficiently handle up to 1800 mA outputcurrents and has a wide input & output voltage range. Thedevice also has an adjustable duty cycle to facilitate design ofhigh efficiency converter. The switch is in full control of theswitching current during entire duty cycle and the device offersextremely fast Over Current Protection response time which cantake out the high current without the need of an external currentpreventing components.
In addition to these features, the MC33067DWG offersan integrated Over Temperature Protection with hystereticfunctionality. This feature protects the external components fromexcessive power dissipation and can be used as a soft start circuitfor startup control. Furthermore it includes Under Voltage LockOutfunctionality to prevent the device from running out of charge andUnder Voltage Detection for shutdown or reaction control.
The MC33067DWG is well suited for a variety ofapplications including DC – DC converters, DC – AC inverters,automotive and industrial automation controls, automotive audioand communications systems, battery management systems, powerconverters and UPSs.
To explain how the MC33067DWG works, the blockdiagram provides an insight into the basics of this device. Itconsists of two MOSFETs, one of them connected in series with theInput Voltage and the second one connected in series to theOutput Voltage. When the input voltage is applied, therequired energy is drawn from the input through a current limitedpower supply to the Control Circuit. The Control Circuit chargesthe main Capacitor up to the reference voltage. Here, the currentflows through the Sense Resistor to charge the Main Cap and drivingthe Gate Signal. The Gate Signal is then sent to the MOSFET, thusactivating the switch.
The output voltage is sensed by the Voltage Dividerand is compared to the reference voltage. The voltage differencegenerated at the output is fed back to the Control Circuit and a newcurrent is generated. This current creates a gate voltage, thusadjusting the MOSFETs gate voltage accordingly. The losses at theMOSFET switches are minimized by turning the switch on and offrapidly and the device can effectively regulate the Output Voltage.
The MC33067DWG is a highly efficient voltageregulator with excellent current, temperature and voltageprotection. Its wide input and output voltage range allow for arange of applications and its fast and accurate current limitcircuitry minimize switching losses. Furthermore, it includesover-temperature protection and helps to design high efficiencyconventers quickly.
