MC33889DDW Application Field and Working Principle

MC33889DDW is an interface device from NXP (formerly known as Freescale) for three lower power and low voltage systems. It is a highly integrated dual-channel very low power (VLPP) synchronous bridge driver. It was designed to provide low voltage (1.8V-3.3V) operation together with the lowest possible power dissipation and tolerates voltages ranging from 5V to 33Vdc. Working Principle

The MC33889DDW uses a PWM algorithm to generate the bridge signals. The PWM algorithm provides a variable duty cycle for each bridge. This variable duty cycle is determined by either the input control pins, the user-programmable inputs or the frequency modulation (FM) PWM control. The PWM algorithm can use either continuous or synchronized PWM output signals. With the FM PWM, the duty cycle or period of the pulses is modulated to reduce the audible noise. The MC33889DDW’s dual-channel bridge driver has a voltage-controlled bridge that can be used to generate bridge drive signals. By setting the adjustment registers, the user can adjust the wide-body swing and gate current. In addition, the bridge drive width can be set to one of four options; Power Mode (slow and quiet), Turbo Mode (fast and loud), Linear Mode (sine output wave) or Normal Mode (normal mode). The MC33889DDW provides full protection for the bridges by employing an onboard thermal shut-down feature. This feature will automatically shut-down the bridge when it reaches a given temperature limit, protecting the bridge from overheating.
