MC3403NSR is a common-base current-controlled linear amplifier IC provided by Motorola. It is typically used for transducer interface, when having to perform power-amplified pulse width-modulating or pulse density-modulating (PDM) feedback circuits. The MC3403NSR finds its major applications in the field of process and instrumentation control, digital-to-analog converter (DAC) integrator, voltage-to-frequency converter (VFC) applications, digital pulse width and density modulation, and also in military systems.
The MC3403NSR is designed such that it is based on the current and voltage dependent characteristics of a bipolar junction transistor (BJT). This type of structure offers high-gain output power and attractive dynamic performance. It has been designed to minimize the usual problems found in current-controlled amplifiers, such as thermal drift, offset and dependency to supply voltage. It is an integrated package that addresses multiple internal circuit functions besides the basic amplifier.
Apart from the current-controlled amplifier, the MC3403NSR comprises of two voltage-controlled negative feedback loops; a voltage referencing loop, and a voltage-limiting loop. The control loop controls the amplitude of the negative feedback voltage, which in turn is delivered to the output driver stage via a phase-compensated negative feedback amplifier. The voltage referencing loop sets the reference voltage of the amplifier, while the voltage limiting loop provide regulates the amplitude of the output voltage. The MC3403NSR also contains a few output driver stage, a class-B complementary output stage, and a power output stage.
The class-B complementary output stage has been designed to provide optimum performance when being used in applications involving power amplifiers, micro-controllers and digital signals. It consists of a set of field-effect transistors (FETs) connected in a complimentary pair. These FETs provide a high-speed switching operation, with low power consumption. The power output stage is also made up of a pair of complimentary FETs and provides the amplifier with the necessary power needed to drive its output. The combination of the two output drivers make up the MC3403NSR.
The MC3403NSR is a commonly used IC for linear amplification applications.
