The MC3486DG4 is a digital driver, receiver transceiver that combines both a transmitter and a receiver onto single chip. It provides connection from TTL/CMOS to unbalanced twisted-pair cables, meets EIA-232E and ITU-T V.28 standards for low-speed data communications, and can be used for substituting or cascading to RS-232E or V.35 interfaces. Additionally, this device features a built-in termination resistors, allowing the user to have a complete and ready-to-use interface without the need of an external termination network. This device incorporates both a low-voltage, low-power output stage, and a high-voltage, high-power an inverted output generating EXTITM as both a negative and perfectly constant voltage in relation to the negative power supply. The MC3486DG4 has a robust power supply design and supports signals up to 120 kbps rates.
Application Field
The MC3486DG4 is a versatile digital driver, receiver transceiver which is suitable for a wide range of applications. Its built-in termination resistors makes it ideal for use in serial interfaces such as RS-232, RS-422 and EIA-485, for providing connection from TTL/CMOS to unbalanced twisted-pair cables. It is also suitable for use in modem applications, such as V.35/RS-449 and EIA/TIA-709. This device also offers a rated common-mode voltage of ±12V, which is suitable for modem applications where a negative common-mode voltage is needed, such as EIA/TIA-449.
Working Principle
The MC3486DG4 is a single-chip driver/receiver transceiver which provides full-duplex, asynchronous data communication with supporting data rates up to 120 Kbps. When the transmitting section is enabled, transmit parallel data up to 8 bits is loaded onto the TXD (Tx Data) pins and serialized through the Tx Shift Register and output through the RS (Receive-to-Send) pins. On the other hand, when the receiving section is enabled, serial data is shifted through the Rx Shift Register and decomposed into the receive parallel data which is output on the RXD (Rx Data) pins. The RS (Receive-to-Send) pin is also used for flow control and may be used to drive RX_RDY or TX_RDY pins on the receiver or transmitter/driver respectively.
The MC3486DG4 also incorporates a safety feature which allows multiple transmitters to be connected in parallel, without the risk of excessive current through the device. This prevents data corruption arising from voltage differences between the transmitters. The built-in termination resistors provide the necessary impedance matching and prevent reflections at the end of the transmission line.
The MC3486DG4 also offers an EXTITM pin with an active inverted output as both a negative and perfectly constant voltage in relation to the negative power supply. This provides further protection against heavy loads transients and transceiver faults.
