MC34063ADG4 application field and working principle

The MC34063ADG4 is a standard monolithic integrated circuit (IC) with high efficiency, low power consumption, and fast switching times. It belongs to the category of switched-mode power-supply (SMPS) control ICs, and is also known as a “DC-DC switching regulator converter.” It is used in a wide range of applications, such as panel meters and metering equipment, automotive and consumer electronic applications, LED lighting, etc.

A DC-DC switching regulator is a type of electronic power converter that regulates an input voltage to output a higher or lower specified value. The regulator will achieve this by switching the load on-off in different pulses, thus modulating the output. In order to control the output accurately, two feedback loops are utilized. The device also provides over-current protection, thermal shutdown, frequency jittering, soft-start, and external capacitor fault protection.

The external components required for this IC includes a P-channel MOSFET switch, an inductor, two capacitors, and a resistor. The P-Channel MOSFET switch is used as the switching element, which is triggered by the Control Terminal (CT) at the IC. The resistor is connected from the input voltage to the CT pin, and helps determine the frequency at which the switch works. The feeding inductor is used to filter out high-frequency noise. The input and output capacitors are meant to filter high-frequency voltage spikes that can be generated by the switch.

To ensure optimal and efficient operation of the MC34063AH IC, the external components must be chosen carefully. The P-channel MOSFET should have a Gate-Source Threshold Voltage (Vgs) of less than 2.5V, and a maximum Drain-Source Voltage (Vds) of more than or equal to the input voltage. The input and output capacitors need to be able to handle the desired output voltage, and should have a low equivalent series resistance (ESR). The resistor should be chosen to match the load requirements, and the inductor should have a low resistance (DCR) to help reduce the power losses.
