MC34845CEP is a simple and powerful inductive step-up DC-DC driver IC designed by ON Semiconductor. It features an operating temperature range of 40°C to +85°C, a high efficiency of up to 90%, and a high switching frequency of up to 300kHz. It can be used for driving a wide range of LED configurations including single LEDs, multiple LEDs in series and multiple LEDs in parallel. This step-up DC-DC driver IC is also capable of providing a control signal for driving an external P-N junction switch.

Working Principle

The MC34845CEP works on a step-up DC-DC conversion principle. It uses an inductor to convert a low input voltage to a higher output voltage. When a low voltage DC source is applied to the input of the MC34845CEP, an internal switch is turned on, driving current through the inductor. This causes the inductor to store energy which is then released through an internal diode. The output voltage is thus increased to a level that is sufficient to drive the external LED. When the internal switch is turned off, the inductor’s stored energy is released through the diode, driving current through the LED.

The MC34845CEP also has a sense pin which can be used to provide a control signal for driving an external P-N junction switch. The internal current-sense mechanism of the IC senses the output current and compares it to an internally set reference. If the output current is higher than the reference, the sense pin\'s voltage ramps up until the reference is reached. This provides a control signal to drive a power switch, increasing the load current and increasing the output voltage.
