Principle of Operation

The MC7806AECT is a three-terminal positive voltage, current-limited linear regulator that operates as a low drop-out (LDO) regulator. An internal voltage reference voltage, REF, is compared with a feedback voltage on the output pin, and the resulting error is amplified by an internal error amplifier. The amplifier applies correction to the pass transistor gate voltage, controlling the output voltage directly.

The two-stage internal current limit circuit consists of a current sense amplifier and an internal power MOSFET. The current limit amplifier monitors the voltage across the current-sense resistor, RS, and produces a voltage proportional to the sense current. This which is then compared to an internal reference. If the sensed current exceeds the set limit, the current limit amplifier cuts off the power MOSFET gate voltage, shutting down the output.

The device features two modes of operation, Low Drop-Out (LDO) and Current Limit (CL). In LDO mode, the output is accurately regulated with minimal amount of drop-out voltage, while in CL mode, the current is limited to a maximum predetermined limit, allowing the regulator to protect itself and the load from transient events.

The MC7806AECT is designed to operate with a single-ended power supply, drawing an input voltage between 4.5 volts and 23 volts. The device also features over-voltage, under-voltage, and reverse voltage protection.
