Working Principle

The working of the MC78L05ABPRAG is quite simple and is based on Voltage Regulation Principle. The IC provides a regulation loop between its Input Pin (V_in) and Output Pin (V_out) wherein it compares a fixed internal Reference Voltage against its Input Supply. When both voltages match, the IC disables its Internal Switching and stops the voltage conversion process.

There is a Pass Transistor located between the Input Pin (V_in) and Output Pin (V_out) of the IC, and its duty is to regulate the output voltage when a higher voltage exists on its Input Pin. The Output Pin (V_out) is connected to a Fused Zener Diode, which is again connected to Internal Reference Voltage Source. When the voltage across the Input Pin (V_in) is higher than the Reference Voltage, the Pass Transistor starts conducting, providing the required clamp to V_out, thereby regulating the output voltage.

The Pass Transistor of the MC78L05ABPRAG is designed in such way, that it keeps conducting upon the source voltage powering it until and unless the reference voltage value is reached. This also eliminates the need of an external driving circuit in order to regulate the output voltage.

The MC78L05ABPRAG comprises an inbuilt over-voltage protection feature and reduces dynamic output noise by using special 12.5mV filtering element on its output and allows the device to operate at efficiencies as high as 75%. It provides a series regulated voltage path for Miniaturized, Portable and Battery-Coupled electronics and is one of the most popular regulators in the market.
