Traditional linear voltage regulators provide a regulated output voltage by establishing a relatively large voltage drop between the input and output. Usually, this is done by using an internal pass NPN or PNP transistor whose emitter is connected to the output and collector to the input terminal of the regulator. The control terminal of this transistors is fed with a reference voltage derived from a temperature-compensated bandgap reference.The MC78M08ACTG is a positive voltage regulator offering a current-limiting, thermal-shutdown circuit and short-circuit current-limit protection. It employs a fixed 3-pin TO-220 package with a maximum output current of 0.8A. The MC78M08ACTG provides a fixed output voltage with an accuracy over the full range of operating temperature. It includes an internal temperature-sensitive current-limiting circuitry for protection against excessive output current conditions. The output voltage is adjustable by the use of external resistor and capacitor, which serve as bleeder resistors.
