MCP1631VHV-500E/ST is a high voltage, monolithic , digitally-enhanced, synchronous step-down switching DC-DC controller designed for a wide-range of applications including industrial, communications, medical, and automotive.

Working Principle
In PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) applications, the MCP1631VHV-500E/ST replaces the oscillator and gate driver functions of a switching regulator and also includes overvoltage protection and low current shutdown. The MCP1631VHV-500E/ST is a switching regulator composed of a high frequency oscillator, a synchronous rectifier MOSFET driver, an analog voltage reference, and an overload protection circuit. The wide operating temperature range, high switching frequency, and low on-resistance make this device ideal for use in a variety of voltage converter applications.
The internal oscillator has an adjustable frequency with a fixed-frequency option. The pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal created by this oscillator control the on- time of the rectifier MOSFET which results in an output voltage. The power switching is synchronous and the rectified voltage is regulated at the same frequency of the oscillator. The analog voltage reference sets the peak die voltage and can be configured as either a linear or Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) converter.
The current-sense circuitry is the means for controlling the output current, detecting the rectified output current and providing a signal to the PWM controller. This sensing happens using the peak current mode control. After the current is limited, then the voltage can be regulated. The voltage regulator circuitry utilizes a differential amplifier and an error amplifier to compare the power supply output voltage to a reference. The output of this comparison drives a PWM controller which adjusts the width of the PWM signal and in turn adjusts the output voltage.
In overload and short-circuit protection, The MCP1631VHV-500E/ST uses a bi-directional over current circuit. The external sense resistor determines the threshold value at which the MCP1631VHV-500E/ST shuts down.
