MCP2210-I/SO

MCP2210-I/SO is a USB-to-SPI. It is a bridge device that combines a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface, a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus and a Direct Parallel Connection (DPC) to form a single integrated chip.

Application Field

MCP2210-I/SO is a compact, low-power, low-cost bridge device with a small footprint, ideal for use in mobile and small form factor applications. For example, the device can be used for interfacing between a USB port and an SPI-based EEPROM for data storage, payment terminal accessories such as POS machines, smart card readers, authentication/security ICs and USB dongles.

Working Principle

MCP2210-I/SO can be connected to a USB port for power and data exchange, and connected to an SPI slave device with the DPC port. The USB interface uses the I2C protocol to exchange data with the host machine. The SPI interface provides 4-wire full duplex communication to connect to the SPI bus peripherals. This includes an SPI slave select (SS) internal chip select signal and an external chip select signal (CS#) to select the SPI device to be interacted. The MCP2210-I/SO also contains an interrupt (INT#) signal which can be connected to an interrupt line on the host to provide interrupt notification of certain operations.

The MCP2210-I/SO device provides an asynchronous serial peripheral interface port with a slave select signal (SS#). This port supports single, dual and quad mode SPI, and is able to communicate in full-duplex and one-bit modes. The SPI slave devices are configured through the USB interface using commands sent over I2C using the standard HID-I2C protocol. Configuration parameters such as the SPI clock frequency, number of data bits and address sizes are able to be set up without having to switch the DPC port off, reducing power consumption and maximising performance.

In addition, the MCP2210-I/SO device provides an internal register set which stores settings, parameters, and configuration data received from the host application. This includes settings such as the baud rate, number of data bits and address sizes, which all contribute to the performance of the SPI bus when interacting with the SPI slave devices. Any settings that are not specified in the I2C command are taken from this register set.

By operating all of its functions through the I2C protocol and providing an internal register set, MCP2210-I/SO provides a tightly coupled, robust solution for USB and SPI connection. This low power, low cost bridge device provides a simple interface for adding USB connectivity to existing SPI-based hardware devices, making them much more user friendly and accessible.
