MCP7940M-I/P is a real-time clock integrated circuit, capable of providing accurate timing information necessary for running a wide variety of operating systems and microcontroller based systems. It is designed to produce multiple timing lines, including both PCLK and PWM, while being able to withstand a wide range of voltage, temperature, and humidity conditions. This makes it especially suitable for applications in consumer electronics, automotive, medical, industrial and other fields.

MCP7940M-I/P is a low power device and allows power conservation through selectable levels of standby current drawn by the device, which can be configured in software. The device performs all essential clock and calendar functions, such as generating time and date information. It also offers an alarm function for single or periodic operations, allowing for an external interrupt condition to occur when the programmed time/date value is reached.

The device consists of an oscillator, a 3V battery backup source, a system clock generator, and a microcontroller port. The oscillator is the source for the time base of the real-time clock and typically runs with a 32.768kHz crystal, allowing for a time accuracy of up to ±20ppm. The 3V battery backup source is used as a backup power supply in order to ensure continuous operation of the chip in the event of a power failure.

The system clock generator module controls the external clock, or I/O clock, and provides frequencies ranging from 1MHz to 64MHz in 0.5MHz steps. This allows for versatile program timing and data acquisition functions. The microcontroller port contains multiple serial interfaces and an I2C master/slave port, which allow for the connection of microcontrollers and other logic elements to the device. It also features an auto-shutdown capability, allowing the device to be powered down when it is not in use.

In addition to its timekeeping functions, MCP7940M-I/P can be used as a timer source for systems such as background power shutdown, wake up, and a reset function. It can also be used to generate periodic interrupt events for microcontroller based systems, providing a low power means of triggering various algorithms.
