Therefore, Battery Charger (PMIC - Battery Chargers) has become an indispensable part in portable electronic products.
The MCP73831T-5ACI/OT is a linear battery charger made by Microchip Technology. This charger is a versatile constant-current/constant-voltage linear charger for single-cell Li-Ion battery. It included an integrated dynamic power management (DPM) module, simplifying the power delivery design. The charger works in default configuration. It requires no external components for applications charging a single-cell Li-ion battery.
MCP73831T-5ACI/OT is a “universal” device that can practically work on all battery chemistries, such as NiCd, NiMH and Li-Ion cells. Successive approximate charging algorithm, it provide constant current and constant voltage charging. The built-in thermal feedback monitoring circuit to prevent thermal runaway dangerous. It provides users with a more secure and efficient charging solution for their electronic products.
Application Field
MCP73831T-5ACI/OT is designed to provide simple, fast, and safe charging of single-cell Li-Ion or Li-Ion battery packs. This charger can be used on a wide of range of devices, including smart phones, tablets, cameras, GPS navigators, wearable devices, portable media players, laptop computer and other consumer electronics. In addition, it can also be used in automotive applications, powering rechargeable vehicle systems and aftermarket accessories.
Working Principle
MCP73831T-5ACI/OT based on the Successive Approximation Register (SAR) system, to provide Constant Current / Constant Voltage (CC/CV) charging for single cell Li-ion batteries. The charger integrates a power FET, current sense resistor, thermal regulation,charge status monitor and charge termination algorithm, etc. It has multiple feature including preconditioning, trickle charge and automatic recharge.
The charge process of MCP73831T-5ACI/OT is composed of the following stages:
1.Preconditioning Charge: When the Input voltage is applied, it will enter the Preconditioning Charge mode if the battery voltage is less than 2.9V. In this stage, the charger will provide a constant current of 50mA (typ) to the battery until its voltage reaches 2.9V. Once the battery voltage reaches to 2.9V, the charger moves to the Constant Current stage.
2.Constant Current Charge: In this stage, the charger provides a constant current to the battery and maintains a constant voltage of 4.2V on the system output. The charge current is set by an external resistor. The charge current can be adjusted in the range of 25mA (typ) to 800mA (max).
3.Constant Voltage Charge: In this stage, the charger maintains a constant voltage of 4.2V and drops the charge current gradually as the battery approaches full charge. The charger continuously monitors the battery voltage and stops charging when the voltage reaches a set point.
4.Trickle Charge: The charger will reduce the output current to 1/16 ICHG in this stage, and maintains battery voltage at 4.2VV (typ). The charger will go back to the Constant Current stage and start a new cycle when the battery voltage drops due to system load changes.
5.Automatic Recharge: This feature enables the charger to automatically recharge the battery when the battery voltage drops below a predetermined level.
MCP73831T-5ACI/OT has over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, short-circuit protection and reverse polarity protection. It is a high efficiency and cost effective solution for charging Lithium-ion Batteries.
