Real time clocks (RTCs) are used in computers, smartphones and other electronic devices and are designed to keep track of time even when powered off, and are commonly used in point of sale systems and time keeping applications. They are typically powered by an external battery, and usually have a backup function in case of power failure. MCP79521-I/MS is an In-System Programming Ultra-Low Power Standalone RTC derived from Microchip’s low power libraries.
The MCP79521-I/MS is a 32kHz oscillator-based RTC that allows for ±2 ppm accuracy over the temperature range. It consumes very low quiescent current of 700 nA, and can be powered from either a 3 V or 5 V supply. The device includes an adjustable digital trim function, where the user can program the oscillator by adding or subtracting digital values from the raw frequency. This allows the device to be very accurate across temperature.
The device has various built-in alarms and timers, which allow applications to schedule events, such as periodic interrupt, dates, times and other recurring events. These alarms can be triggered on specific date, minute, hour, month, year and week of year. Additionally, the device has programmable interrupt mask and status bits, so that interrupts can be blocked or enabled as needed. The device also supports leap year detection, so that calendar time is accurately tracked.
The MCP79521-I/MS includes oscillator-based circuit to detect external power failure. This feature is important for applications where uninterrupted operation is necessary.
