An optoisolator, also referred to as an optocoupler or an optoelectronic isolator, is an electronic device that is used to separate input and output pathways of electrical signals.

The MCT5211M is a type of optoisolator and is a part of the transistor, photovoltaic output family. It is composed of a dual channel optocoupler with digital outputs that are directly compatible with TTL and 5 V CMOS logic. The device ensures very high immunity against magnetic fields, noise, and high speed transients. Its dual channel structure reduces the need for multiple package on a board, saving space.

The basic application field of the MCT5211M optoisolator is to provide a very reliable electrical isolation between two pathways of electrical systems with minimum power consumption and low cost. It is used to isolate two circuits that may have different operating potentials, and also can be used for buffering and amplification of signals without creating paths for ground loops. It is often used to couple digital or analog signals between two subsystems with respect to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) or any other reasons.

The working of an optoisolator is based on transferring electrical signals from its input to the output using light. An LED is connected to the input which, when receives power from the input stage, emits light. This light is detected by an integrated photodetector on the output side which converts it back into an electrical signal. An important feature of the MCT5211M optoisolator is that it has high transfer isolation voltage between both channels of up to 2.5 kV.

The MCT5211M is designed to operate from -40°C to 85°C, while its storage temperature can range from -55°C to 100°C. It has a dual output which enables it to be used in a variety of applications. Moreover, this optoisolator can be powered with an input current as low as 2.5mA. The smd package provides more reliability and flexibility.
