The MIC2151YML-TR is a DC-DC switching controller developed by Microchip which is a versatile digital PMIC that is designed for high efficiency, easily programmable and offer features like extended surge protection and buck-enable control ability. It belongs to DC-DC switching controllers.

As a high-performance, digital synchronous buck controller, the MIC2151YML-TR provides a variety of features including ultra-fast loop transient response, programmable output voltage, full-range adjustable output currents, flexible sequencing, and remote-kill over-power protection (RKOPP). It also incorporates patented soft-start circuitry and thermal shutdown protection for enhanced reliability.

The MIC2151YML-TR operates with a peak 98% efficiency. Its supports a range of input voltages from 4V - 16V, an adjustable user-defined output voltage from 0.8V - 12V and an output drive current of up to 2A for the low side MOSFET. It also offers several features to enhance the reliability and performance of the system such as enable control, extended surge protection, remote-kill over-power protection, adjustable current limiting and adjustable thermal shutdown.

The working principle of the device is simple. The MIC2151YML-TR takes the provided power supply voltage, such as a 4V to 16V input voltage, and regulates the output voltage. When the load current is low, the output voltage is set relatively low. As the load current increases, the output voltage rises slightly to maintain a constant output voltage. The whole process is controlled by the device’s internal comparator. This comparator monitors the output voltage, and when it falls below a certain threshold, the internal switching circuitry is activated to drive the output voltage back up to the required level.

Additionally, an adjustable current limit provides protection from damage caused by over-current conditions. This feature is implemented by comparing the sensed MOSFET current to an internal reference level. Once the sensed current exceeds the reference, it triggers the over-current limit and turns off the output switch.

The MIC2151YML-TR also incorporates a softstart feature to prevent inrush currents upon start-up. This feature ensures that the power supplies remain in the audible range by limiting the input current ramps on start-up. This protects the power supply and prolongs its life.
