MIC29201-3.3YM Application Field and Working Principle

Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) are specialized chips used in mobile and desktop computing applications to govern and regulate the supply of electrical power to other circuits in the system. PMICs typically integrate several power-supply circuits and functions into a single integrated circuit (IC). Voltage Regulators are a key component of PMICs, which regulate the output voltage level of the power supply, providing a suitable operating voltage for the connected circuit. Linear regulators are one of the major categories of regulators used for providing a regulated output voltage.The MIC29201-3.3YM is a Low Dropout (LDO) linear Voltage Regulator based on a completely integrated P-channel MOSFET design. This device has an output voltage of 3.3V and a Maximum Input voltage of 24V (with a maximum input to output differential of 2.5V). This regulator has an active low enable function and is capable of sourcing up to 500mA maximum output current. It has load regulation of 40mV and offers over-current protection or hiccup mode to limit total output current to a safe level in the event of a fault. The MIC29201-3.3YM is designed for applications including, but not limited to, post regulator for switching supplies, active backlighting for LCD screens, 3V3 logic supplies, optical and data storage systems, outrush current limiting and battery-backup systems.The IC offers a low drop-out voltage and a low quiescent current resulting in high power conversion efficiency making it well-suited for high current applications. It operates at junction temperatures ranging from −40 °C to +125 °C and is available in a 3mm x 3mm miniDFN-10L or MSOP-10L package with Exposed Pad.The MIC29201-3.3YM works on the negative voltage linear regulator principle by using an active pass element (usually an NMOSFET) to regulate the output voltage. In the MIC29201-3.3YM, an on-chip P-Channel MOSFET is used as the pass element. This device primarily uses two feedback resistors, a voltage reference source and an error amplifier to control the gate voltage of the pass element (here, the P-Channel MOSFET). When the output voltage drops, the current through the feedback resistor increases, creating a voltage drop which is then amplified by the error amplifier. This amplified voltage is then compared with the reference voltage and the resultant difference is combined with a power-on reset circuit to create a gate-drive signal controlling the gate voltage of the MOSFET, thus regulating the output voltage. The MIC29201-3.3YM also uses an Enable pin (EN) controlled by an external voltage or control signal, to enable/disable the device whenever necessary. When the Enable pin is high then the device is enabled and when it is low then the device is disabled.The MIC29201-3.3YM offers a wide range of features and provides excellent performance with respect to output voltage regulation, load regulation and low quiescent current resulting in very high efficiency over the full load range. Thus, the MIC29201-3.3YM is a great solution for 3V3 post regulator applications.
