The MIC2920A-5.0BS TR is a high-performance, low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator. The MIC2920A-5.0BS TR is a three-terminal, adjustable LDO voltage regulator that can provide stable, low-noise, low-dropout performance from 1.5V to 5.0V output. It features low quiescent current, low output noise, fast transient response, and excellent line and load regulation. It also features an on-board enable logic and a wide operation temperature range (up to +125°C). The device has current limit and thermal protection. Working Principle
The MIC2920A-5.0BS TR is a three-terminal, low-dropout voltage regulator. It operates with an input voltage range of 1.5V to 5.0V, and can supply an output voltage from 1.5V to 5.0V with an output current of 150mA. It also features built-in current limiting, thermal shut-down, enable logic, and ESD protection for all pins.
The device operates using the following principles: In the ideal linear regulator topology, a N-channel MOSFET is connected in series between the input supply and the output terminal. This series connected MOSFET is usually referred to as the “pass element”. When the output terminal is pulled low, the current through the pass element is decreased and the voltage across the pass element, VGS, decreases. As the voltage across the pass element decreases, the resistance, or Ron, increases, causing the voltage at the output terminal to drop as well.
This process continues until the Pass Element reaches the “knee point”, at which point the gate-source voltage, VGS, is equal to the gate-drain voltage, VDS and the MOSFET’s resistance is maximized (Ron max). At this point the output terminal is held in the regulated state. This process is commonly referred to as the “Feedback Loop” and is used by the regulator controller to control the output voltage and ensure a stable output voltage.
The MIC2920A-5.0BS TR also features several additional features that enhance its performance. These features include: an additional current limit function to protect the device against short-term overloads, a thermal shut-down feature to protect the device against long-term overloads, and an on-board enable logic to facilitate power sequencing. These features help to ensure that the device can maintain its rated performance in a wide range of applications.
